single ticket has scooped the UK’s fifth biggest-ever lottery jackpot after winning £122 million in the EuroMillions draw.
The lifechanging sum was won in Friday’s draw.
This marks the second time a UK-bought ticket has taken the EuroMillions top prize this year, as another lucky ticket-holder won the £39 million jackpot in the draw on New Year’s Day, Camelot said.
The biggest prize ever won by a UK ticket-holder stands at £170,221,000 when their numbers came up in October 2019. The winner decided to remain anonymous.
A few months earlier in June 2019, another UK player, who also decided to remain anonymous, won £123,458,008 which puts them fourth in Camelot’s winners rich list – just above this week’s winner.
Colin Weir and wife Chris, from Largs in North Ayrshire claimed the second-highest prize – £161 million – in July 2011.
The couple set up the Weir Charitable Trust and made a donation to a community football club in Largs before Mr Weir’s death in 2019 after a short illness.
Adrian and Gillian Bayford, from Suffolk, took home more than £148 million in August 2012, while the sixth-highest UK winner – who secured £121 million – remained anonymous.
Patrick and Frances Connolly, of County Armagh, won £114.9 million on New Year’s Day in 2019 while the winner of £113,019,926 in October 2010 decided to stay out of the spotlight.
Neil Trotter, of Surrey, is now the UK’s ninth-highest winner after scooping £107.9 million on the EuroMillions lottery in 2014.
He told the BBC in 2019 that “I am living my dream”, but it had taken him a few years to get used to the surge in his finances.
He bought a big house with a lake, with some land that needed a lot of work, which he said gave him something to do. Mr Trotter said he also helped out some people financially.
Completing the new top 10 rich list is Steve and Lenka Thomson from Selsey in West Sussex, who took home £105 million in November 2019.
Speaking after the draw, father-of-three Mr Thomson said he felt like he was having a heart attack when he realised he had the winning numbers on his Lucky Dip ticket.
Mr Thomson said the priority for himself and his wife would be buying a new house with a bedroom each for their daughter and their two sons.
The winning EuroMillions numbers in Friday’s draw were 04, 21, 34, 40, 47, and the Lucky Star numbers were 02 and 05.
