Tasmanian Activists Protest New Poker Machine Legislation

As the news about the Tasmanian gambling law reports, the upper house of the Parliament has recently approved new regulations regarding poker machines, or co-called pokies. Adopted in November 2021, the legislation ended the Federal Group’s monopoly on pokies, allowing private venues to own or lease poker machines from mid-2023.

The regulation also reformed the gambling tax system in Tasmania. While the tax on pub-based pokies was increased, the levy on poker machines in casinos was reduced from 25.8% of GGR to 10%.

However, anti-gambling activists heavily criticize the legislation of pokies. The campaigners claim that the Tasmanian authorities have missed the opportunity to tighten the regulation on the gambling machines and prevent the high rates of gambling addiction. In addition, the gambling sector was rumored to have influenced the local elections.

Most of the problem gambling in Tasmania is caused by pokies

The activists advocate that Tasmania has the poorest protection against gambling harm in the whole of Australia. And poker machines are the most popular type of gambling activity in the region. Tasmanians, reportedly, spend around AU$50m on pokies monthly. And most of that sum comes from the problem gamblers.
