Moldova Is on the Way to a Full Gambling Ads Ban

Moldova Parliament has held the first reading on advertising restrictions in the country. The bill includes the regulation of the relationship between suppliers, producers, distributors, broadcasters, and consumers. How will this bill change the gambling ads policy? The gambling advertisement ban in Moldova has become more possible after the first reading on the ads issue. According to the sponsors of the bill, the number of daily sold lottery tickets in Moldova is counted by 1.3 million. There was also reported that aggressive gambling marketing causes increase in the number of gambling addicts.

Dumitru Alaiba, a PAS lawmaker, insists on the gambling ads ban because of its damage effect on citizens. According to Dumitru Alaiba, the lottery tickets sales were up from 3.4m lei in 2017 to 613m lei in 2020. Moreover, the total sales for 8 months of 2021 are counted by 2.6bn lei.

The Parliament’s main goal is to bring the legislation system closer to European advertisement standards and to develop the marketing industry of Moldova.

The ban will be active after it passes the second read. In the case of its approval, the ban will include all types of gambling advertisements, such as lottery and sports betting ads. Talking about platforms, under the gambling ads restrictions will be TV, press, movies, billboards, transit, mail, and social networks.
